The Hickman Mills C-1 School District has received the Missouri Reading First Grant for the upcoming school year.
Reading First is part of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (Title I, Part B, Subpart 1). Reading First is designed to assist schools in establishing reading programs for students in kindergarten through third grade. These programs must be founded on scientifically-based reading research and aid in ensuring every student can read well by the end of third grade.
Reading First is a national effort to enable all students to become successful early readers. Funds are dedicated to help states and local school districts eliminate the reading deficit by establishing high-quality, comprehensive reading instruction in kindergarten through grade 3. Building on a solid foundation of research, the program is designed to select, implement, and provide professional development for teachers using scientifically based reading programs, and to ensure accountability through ongoing, valid and reliable screening, diagnostic, and classroom-based assessment.
We are using our grant to improve the quality of our reading instruction in our K-3 classrooms to enable all of our students to become readers through the implementation of the following:
