The Early Childhood Center will be built on a seventeen-acre site at 9201 East Bannister Road, Kansas City, MO and will consume nearly seven-acres of that total site. This property includes the Union Point Elementary School which was built in 1916. The Center is approximately 42,000 sq. ft. and is designed to attain the US Green Building Council’s LEED® Silver certification.
The Early Childhood Center will accommodate a maximum of 432 children and is designed as a single-level building with ramps throughout to promote handicap accessibility and motor skills development. The Center will include a dining area and kitchen,18 classrooms, special services classrooms, gymnasium, meeting spaces and offices. Outdoor play areas will include play structures and natural landscaping will be used along with a tricycle track with tunnel/garage.
The Early Childhood Center will accomodate both student and family programs:
The preschool programs will serve a maximum of 432 children, 3-5 years of age. The three preschool programs include: Title 1, Early Childhood Special Education, & Head Start. The center is designed as a single-level building with ramps throughout to promote handicap accessibility and motor skill development.
The family programs will serve approximately 1,100 families that have children birth to age 5. The three family programs include: Parents As Teachers, Stay At Home Parent Program, and the United Way 'Success By Six' Resource Center.
In addition, the center will include a dining area and kitchen, 18 classrooms, physical & occupational rooms, gymnasium, family meeting rooms, and offices. The outdoor area will include play structures & natural landscaping will be used along with a tricycle track with a tunnel garage.
Construction began on the site in early May 2009 and is due to complete in time for the start of the 2010 school year.
