The following are frequently asked questions concerning the ESOL Department. Other questions not answered below should be directed to the ESOL Department at 816-316-8522.
What does ELL mean?
English Language Learners.
Who is eligible for services?
After enrollment, an initial assessment is conducted. If students meet the ELL program entrance criteria, they are placed in an appropriate ELL class. On-going assessment and teacher feedback concerning students' language achievement in regular classes as well as in ELL classes provide the ELL department the information needed to make adjustments in the services provided to ensure their appropriateness.
How long can students be in the ELL program?
Research has shown that it takes an average of 7-10 years to develop academic language proficiency in a new language. Basic interpersonal communication skills will develop between 2-3 years. While there are some predictable stages in language development, the rate of the process varies from student to student. When students are proficient enough to exit the ELL program, they are mainstreamed into the regular classes. But even students who have exited the program will continue to need teacher support as their English proficiency continues to develop.
What type of classes do ESOL students attend?
It varies depending on whether the student is in elementary or secondary schools. Usually the classes involve instruction in English grammar and phonics, and improvement of literacy and writing skills. The focus is to build English language fluency in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and American culture.
When are the classes?
ELL classes are held at the students' home schools during the regular school day.
